1872-1900

The very earliest history of the FA Cup was dominated by the names of Southern teams of yesteryear.  Teams like Wanderers; Royal Engineers; Clapham Rovers; Old Etonian and Old Carthusians all enjoyed success before 1883 when the Cup first travelled north, to Blackburn.

But it wasn't Blackburn Rovers who won the Cup in 1883, but their short-lived rivals, Blackburn Olympic.  Rovers, would only have to wait a year though, until 1884 for their first win.  And they enjoyed winning the Cup so much, that they won it twice more in succession.

After its sojourn in Blackburn, the Cup wasn't to travel south of Birmingham again in this period as West Bromwich and Aston Villa, both Sheffield clubs, Wolves, Bury, Notts County, Blackburn Rovers again and of course Preston North End all took turns in calling themselves FA Cup Winners.
