1892-1900
In 1892 the Football Alliance, which for three seasons had been a rival to the Football League, was absorbed into the League and a new second division was added. So from the original 12 teams in one division, the Football League now had 28 clubs in two divisions.
Having won the Football League in 1891-1892, Sunderland were the first winners of the First Division in season 1892-1893.
