1951
The Cup Final of 1951 saw an even game between two well matched teams in Newcastle United and Blackpool. Fittingly, the game was decided in the forward lines. Newcastle's was just plain better than Blackpool's - Jackie Milburn, scorer of both goals in a five minute spell just after half time played alongside George Robledo, Tommy Walker, Ernie Taylor and Bobby Mitchell; for Blackpool only Stanley Matthews seemed capable of producing anything like. Even the great Stan Mortensen seemed incapable of capitalising on any of the Wing Wizard's intricate play.
As it was, Joe Harvey mounted the steps to the royal box to receive the Cup from HRH King George VI and to effectively kick start Newcastle's glittering cup decade. Blackpool would of course return to Wembley for their own moment of glory two years later.
