Newcastle United again made it to the FA Cup Final and were aiming to defend the Cup in what would be their eleventh final. Arsenal were playing in their 6th final and they had won 2 years previously in 1950 having beaten Liverpool 2-0.
The match is probably most famous for being the one before 1953(!) but in actual fact it does have a claim to fame of its very own in that scoring the only goal of the game Chilean Jorge 'George' Robledo became the first foreign player to score in an FA Cup Final.
The game was one of a spate in the fifties to have been heavily influenced by one injury or another. After 35 minutes Arsenal's Walley Barnes was stretchered off with a twisted knee handing Newcastle with a numerical advantage that to Arsenal's great credit the Geordies couldn't benefit from until Robledo struck with a header just 6 minutes from time; thus Joe Harvey retraced his steps from twelve moths earlier in leading his team up to collect the Cup.
