Trading Cards of one description or another have been around almost as long as organised, professional football itself. Blank card was first introduced into cigarette packets in the 1870's, initially as a means of providing protection for their addictive contents. By 1876 this idea had evolved into using illustrations for advertising purposes, with this idea taken further to including series of cards so that the smoker would perhaps be more inclined to continue with a particular brand.

In 1887 the Wills Company was the first British outfit to use such cards. Initially they were used to advertise the company's products, but in 1896 they brought out the first set with a sporting theme with a set of 50 cricketers. Wills's first 'football' set was released in 1902 and featured no less than 66 cards, featuring 41 footballers and 25 rugby players, with such luminaries of the day as Steve Bloomer (nr. 9!), William (W.J. or "Fatty") Foulkes (nr. 18), Alex Raisbeck (nr. 24) and Billy Meredith (nr. 37).

Ogden's, a Liverpool company, also included cards with their cigarettes and in fact were ahead of Wills with their first set of photographic cards. Their first football set from them was released in 1906 and was called 'Football Club Colours' and featured (in colour) players from the likes of Everton, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Aston Villa. In 1910 Ogden's released another set, this time of football club badges, but it was to be another 16 years before they next issued cards with footballers, this time entitled 'Captains of Association Football Clubs and Colours'.

In the early part of the twentieth century the market in cigarette cards depicting footballers was relatively busy. The aforementioned Wills and Ogden companies were joined by Singleton & Cole (Shrewsbury), Cohen Weenan, Churchman, Lacey's, John Player and Sons, Gallaher's (Belfast and London), Godfrey Phillips, Carreras and others in producing cards featuring the football stars of the day. However, the second world war put paid to the production of such items - ostensibly to save paper (for propganda purposes?)

So, extra time was started and almost immediately, the heavy Wembley pitch came into play as in the 3rd minute of extra time the deadlock was broken. Roger Hunt, arguably Liverpool's greatest forward stooped low to head in a cross from broken arm victim Gerry Byrne, who was struggling on at left back as because substitutes weren't allowed until 1967. This must have stung Leeds, because the advantage was held for just 2 minutes before Billy Bremner equalised following a knock down from Jackie Charlton. The game was back to its previous stalemate then, until Ian St John, another Liverpool great, got the winner. This time it was the 23 year old Ian Callaghan who supplied the cross and now there was no way back for Leeds.

In getting to the final, United had beaten Brighton and Hove Albion 1-0, and then Everton by the same scoreline. In the third round, Blackburn Rovers suffered a 6-1 hammering and then in their quarter final United beat Burnley 3-2 in a close game. They drew perhaps the best team of the early 1900's in Newcastle United in the semi final, and secured a 1-0 victory. Bristol City played replays in all bar one round, beating Southampton, Bury, Norwich City, Glossop North End and finally Derby County to book their place in the final.

Alongside Sandy Turnbull in the United team was the great Billy Meredith. In common with Turnbull, Meredith had an FA Cup winner's medal as a member of the Manchester City team which won the cup in 1904. Born in Chirk, North Wales, Billy Meredith was destined for a life as a miner. Indeed when he signed his first contract with City it was as an amateur and he commuted from home for the first twelve months as he was still working underground. Eventually he made the move to full time professional football and what a success he made of it. In two spells at City he scored 129 league goals from 367 games on the right wing. After his first spell at City he received an 18 month ban, having been accused and found guilty of attempting to bribe a fellow player to throw a match, Meredith left to join rivals Manchester United. In this second part of his career Meredith played 303 league games scoring a more modest 35 goals. In total, Meredith won the FA Cup twice (with City in 1904 and with United in 1909) and the league championship twice - with United in 1907-08 and 1910-11. Sadly, Turnbull was killed in action at Arras, whilst serving with the East Surrey Regimient in WWI.

Another recently established FA Cup tradition saw both teams joining the competition in the 3rd round. Town saw off Bury after a replay and Arsenal prevailed over Chelsea with a 2-0 win at home. On into the fourth round, Huddersfield were too good for Sheffield United winning 2-1, whilst this time Arsenal were taken to a replay in defeating Birmingham City. In the 5th round, both teams progressed satisfactorily, Arsenal beating Middlesbro and Town defeating Bradford City. So to the sixth round, where The Gunners beat West Ham Utd three-nil and Huddersfield enjoyed a 2-1 win versus Aston Villa. Thus the competition had reached the semi-final stage. The Gunners were drawn against Hull City and in reaching the twin towers. The Chapman-less Huddersfield won its place in the final after beating Sheffield Wednesday at Old Trafford, Manchester.

In the final, played at the end of April, Arsenal were much too good for Huddersfield. The comfortable 2-0 win coming courtesy of goals from Alex James and Jack Lambert. Surprisingly, Arsenal's third all time top scorer Cliff Bastin (only Ian Wright and Thierry Henry have scored more) was not amongst the scorers! Bastin had been signed from Exeter City at the end of season 1928-29 by Herbert Chapman after he'd seen him standing head and shoulders above the rest of the players in a game between Exeter and Watford - he only played 17 times for Exeter, scoring 6 times. Overall, he amassed 178 goals in only 395 appearances for the Gunners - this from the left wing, and despite the presence of Ted Drake in the team. Bastin had won a league title, an FA Cup winners' medal and been capped by England before he was 19. In total, he registered 12 times in 21 appearances for England. As WW2 started when Bastin was only 27 years old, it is perhaps worth considering what he could have achieved had he been able. It is interesting to note that he was excused service in the army at the outbreak of war due to his being deaf and instead served as an ARP warden, actually stationed at top of Highbury stadium!

Newcastle was playing in its second final in two seasons, having lost the previous year's final (and therefore the prestigious League and Cup double) to Aston Villa. The team was also the hot favourite for the Cup as the first decade was indeed a golden period in the club's history, seeing it win the league 3 times (1904-05, 1906-07 and 1908-09) and lose in three Cup finals 1905 and 1908 as well as 1906, before finally winning the FA Cup in 1910.

But enough about Newcastle, this was Everton's day. The journey to the final had seen a defeat for West Brom 3-1 in the first round before a tricky away tie at Chesterfield was negotiated with a 3-0 win. In the third round, a narrow 1-0 victory saw the back of Bradford City before a hum dinger of a quarter final saw Sheffield Wednesday depart from the competition in a 4-3 win for the Toffees. And then, the mother of all semi finals, a 2-0 victory over upstart neighbours Liverpool.

As for the final itself, well it was a dour affair by all accounts - these things so often are. However, Everton's winning goal, coming with just 13 minutes of the match left was worthy of being the winner in an FA Cup Final. It was set up by Jack Sharp on the right wing as, after taking Jack Taylor's pass, he centred for Alex Young to apply the coupe de grace past a despairing Lawrence in the Magpies' goal.

Defending Champions Liverpool managed a 5^th place finish, behind Leeds United, but ahead of their local rivals Everton.  Another pair of same city rivals, Sheffields United and Wednesday were separated by a single point.  The relegation places were taken by Aston Villa and Blackpool.

West Brom played for the first time under the management of Ron Atkinson, and along the way, had beaten Man Utd 5-3 at Old Trafford.  Their team included some fantastic young talent, the likes of Laurie Cunningham, Cyrille Regis, Bryan Robson and Brendan Batson.

At the other end of the table, we saw perennial relegatees, Birmingham City along with London duo Chelsea and QPR leave to join the second division.  Chelsea Manager and Spurs Legend, Danny Blanchflower lost his job and QPR were suffering after the loss of Dave Sexton as manager.

Perhaps this was the season when money first began to be a big issue in English Football.  We saw the first million pound transfer - as Trevor Francis joined Nottingham Forest from Birmingham City.  Of course he repaid a large slice of the fee by scoring the only goal in the European Cup Final, as Forest defeated FC Malmo at the Olympic Stadium, Munich.  Liverpool became one of the first English clubs to have a shirt sponsor when they agreed a sponsorship deal with the Japanese hi-fi manufacturers Hitachi. By the end of the season, more and more clubs were signing deals as teams became even more obsessed with extra-football revenue generation.
