World Cup pre WWII
Call me naive, but I get the impression that pre WWII the World Cup was a much more innocent event. Maybe the game wasn't quite so cynical and maybe money didn't rule it with the iron fist it does now - of course I might be spouting complete rubbish... in point of fact I probably am, when you think about the wheeling and dealing that Jules Rimet had to do in order to get any European teams to compete in Uruguay in 1930. Erm, no... scrub that, the game (and the world) was every bit as cynical and self-interested then as it is now. It's just that WWII hadn't yet happened.
