World Cup 1930
Organised by FIFA President Jules Rimet, the first Football World Cup was held in Uruguay in1930. Initially, due to the choice of host country, no European countires were prepared to take part. However, Rimet used all of his diplomatic skills to persuade teams from Belgium, France, Yugoslavia and Romania to take part. They were joined by nine others, Argentina, Chile, Mexico, Brazil, Bolivia, Uruguay, Peru, USA and Paraguay.
Group winners, Argentina, USA, Uruguay and Yugoslavia took part in the semi-finals, with Argentina and Uruguay going on to contest the final which Uruguay won in front of 93,000 delerious fans.
