World Cup 1934
The second FIFA World Cup was held in Europe, in Italy, and was the first to include a qualification stage. Holders Uruguay, upset by the poor showing from European nations in 1930, declined to defend their title. Sixteen teams took part in the initial knockout round, with all 8 European teams progressing through to the second round.
From this second round, Italy, Austria, Czechoslovakia and Germany progressed to the semi finals. These two matches, played on 3 June saw Italy defeat Austria whilst the Germans lost to Czechoslovakia. On 10 June, Italy won the first of their 4 world cups by beating Czechoslovakia by 2-1 after extra time.
