1888-1889
Preston North End were the winners of the first ever season of the Football League by some margin. Aston Villa trailed them by eleven points by the time the season had ended on January 1889. In fact the games played on 5 January saw the Lilywhites crowned as Champions by virtue of their 4-1 win at home to Notts County whilst Villa were losing 4-0 at Burnley. There were still three games remaining after this time.
North End were completely unbeaten for the season, scoring a whopping 74 goals whilst conceding just 15. Top scorer John Goodall scored 21 goals in the 21 games that he played and his colleague James D Ross managed 18 in his 21 appearances. Just to make things extra special Preston also won the FA Cup this year to become the first team ever to win the coveted League and Cup Double.
