Sheffield Wednesday
Formed in 1867 out of The Wednesday Cricket Club (itself formed in 1820), Sheffield Wednesday is the fifth oldest professional football club in England. In common with the Everton / Liverpool use of Anfield, Sheffield Wednesday did once call Bramall Lane home - although there was no such nonsense over rent as on Merseyside. By the time United was formed in 1889, Wednesday had been gone from Bramall Lane for 2 years. The club's first honour came with the FA Cup in 1896, when they defeated Wolves 2-1 at Crystal Palace.
Next came two successive First Division Titles, in seasons 1902-03 and 03-04. The first triumph came at the expense of Aston Villa and Sunderland who were both beaten by a point. Next season they saw off the challenge of Manchester City by the more comfortable margin of 3 points. The following season, Wednesday were unable to keep up with eventual winners Newcastle United, finishing a disappointing ninth. More FA Cup joy was just around the corner though as they won it again in 1907 beating holders Everton 2-1 at Crystal Palace. Two more league titles in 1928-29 and 29-30, another FA Cup in 1935 and then that was it until a League Cup victory in 1991.
