Sunderland AFC
Sunderland AFC was formed in 1879 by school teacher James Allan as Sunderland District and Teachers Association Football Club. The 'District and Teachers' bit was dropped soon afterwards in order to allow other professional people to join the club. By 1888 Allan had moved away to form a short lived rival club - Sunderland Albion, upset at SAFC's recruitment of professional players.
After Allan had left the way was clear for Sunderland to apply to join the newly formed Football League, which they did in 1890 in time for season 1890-91. In only their second season they became Champions of the Football League, a feat which they repeated the following season to become Champions of Division One in the new two division structure into which the league had expanded. A third successive title was denied the club in 1893-94 as Aston Villa won the league but Sunderland won it again in 1894-95. A more than promising start, but one which the club could not live up to in the longer term. The club's history, though, is not without its high points, as can be seen by its list of honours.
