Slovenia 2-1 USA
I knew that if we gave it time this World Cup would come alive. This was a very interesting game between the countries with the lowest population and the highest. I was running around collecting the children from school etc whilst this was on so I had the company of Radio Five Live. Only one point of annoyance - David Moyes. No, sorry, not David Moyes per se, but his insistence of referring to 'Landon'. 'Landon, Landon, Landon.' Shut up, it's Donovan OK, everybody else refers to players by their last name - why should he and you be so different. Apart from that he's OK.
Anyway, Slovenia took a two goal lead with goals from Birsa and Ljubijankic and to be brutal they were the better team and coasting through to the next phase. However, half time is sometimes not such a good time when you're a couple of goals to the good and so it proved for Slovenia. Within 6 minutes Landon, er, sorry Donovan made it 2-1 and the US was back in the game. Although it wasn't quite one way traffic, the US were pretty much on top now and as the second half progressed it was only a matter of time before coach Bob Bradley's son, Michael made it 2-2 to put the US back in the mix for the next phase and put Slovenia's qualification up for grabs again. There was time for further drama with the referee disallowing a perfectly good winner from Maurice Edu for some perceived infringement in the penalty box.
