Spain 0-1 Switzerland

Poom tang! There you blummen well go!  The European Champions and strong favourites for WC2010 went down to a very well organised Swiss team at the Moses Mabhida Stadium.  Of course Spain had the possession and of course they had the chances, but the point of this game is to put the ball in the back of the net, and they singularly failed so to do.  Of course they were unlucky, especially with Xabi Alonso's thumping drive which nearly snapped the crossbar in two, but then Eren Derdiyok could well have made it 2-0 on 75 minutes.  As it was Gelson Fernandes's scrambled effort on 52 minutes was enough to win the game.

Of course, if we'd been paying attention earlier, then perhaps we'd have seen the beginnings of a group of real drama and excitement.  There's a genuine possibility of this group having three teams finishing on 6 points; let's hope that Chile's inability (not lack of trying) to score more than once against Honduras doesn't come and bite them on the... bum.
