What Italia ’90 means to the England side of SA 2010
This is an interesting article. Italia 90 is one of my favourite World Cups - I was student at the time and well into the whole going to the pub to watch the game thing. England started poorly, struggling to a draw with Ireland before changing tactics in order to face the Dutch. Although goalless, the game gave them the confidence to then win against Egypt before heading off on their run to the semi-finals against the (West) Germans. Memories of the game are hazy, but England probably should have won before it got anywhere near penalties. Gascoigne was irrepressible and in Lineker, there was a striker of real skill, a devastating predator in the box before Thierry Henry had even learned to speak English, let alone come up with the phrase 'fox in the box'. So, ignore the rubbish printed in the gutter press (Mail, Express, Sun, Star, possibly not the Mirror) and try and enjoy the game without wallowing in all their jingoistic garbage.

Of the 23 members of the current England squad, 16 were born between the years of 1978 and 1982. Like any closely defined generation, there are shared memories, common influences.
